I'm the award-winning senior staff writer at Denver's 5280 magazine. I'm also a frequent features contributor to Sports Illustrated and ESPN, and I'm an adjunct professor at the University of Denver's Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies.
I've written about everything from homelessness in Denver to 19th Century serial killers to Paralympic cheaters. I've done television work for ESPN, as well as voice-overs for online projects at Sports Illustrated. I've also contributed to Esquire and Men's Health magazines, among many others.
My features have been recognized by the National Magazine Awards for Print and Digital Media, the City and Regional Magazine Association, the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists and the Society of Professional Journalists. My work has been anthologized twice in the "Best American Sports Writing" series (with four others listed as "notable"), in "Next Wave" (a collection of the best American writers younger than 40), in "Words Matter" (which features 20 influential University of Missouri School of Journalism graduates) and in "Mile High Stories: 25 years of writing at 5280". Additionally, my work has been featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" and on the TODAY Show. In 2021, my writing was nominated for a National Magazine Award. In 2014 and in 2020, I was named CRMA's writer of the year. I've been a finalist for the award eight times.
Prior to my work in magazines, I was a reporter for The Associated Press, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News. I've previously served as a senior editor and writing coach for the baseball-statistics website FanGraphs, and I was an adjunct professor at the Metropolitan State University of Denver's Department of Journalism and Media Production. I am a regular guest speaker at journalism schools nationwide, including the University of Missouri, the University of Illinois, the University of Tennessee and New York University.
I was born near Boston, but I was raised in Colorado. I graduated with honors from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. I'm married to my high school sweetheart and we have two children.
